Choose a Side Table for the Space Beside Your Chair

A side table should save you from repeatedly reaching to the ground. It does not need to become a second dining table. The useful size is the smallest stable surface that holds your actual objects while leaving room to sit, stand, and move around the chair.

Make a paper tabletop

Place your usual mug, book, and small light on a household table. Arrange them as you would use them, then trace a rectangle around the group on paper. Leave practical space between the objects instead of touching their edges. This is your usable-top requirement. Compare it with the product's actual tabletop dimensions, not its overall frame width or an angled lifestyle photograph.

Test seated reach

Sit in your camp chair and use a stable household surface to estimate a comfortable height. Note how far you lean to reach the far edge. A small low table may suit a ground-level picnic but be awkward beside a high chair. NEMO's dual-height Moonlander is one example of a design that explicitly offers different surface heights; compare the selected configuration rather than assuming adjustability means every height is available.

Allow room for the legs

Mark the proposed leg footprint beside the chair. Check the path you use when standing up, and leave room for a neighboring camper. Look at how the table locks open and whether feet or braces occupy space below the edge. Confirm its stated load limit and permitted uses. A small accessory table is not a stool, step, or support for a person.

Consider the table you already bring

A clear corner of the main camp table may perform the same job if you rearrange seats. A suitable existing folding table can also be worth using before buying a specialist miniature version. Compare packed dimensions in your vehicle, especially the thickness of a folded top. If the tabletop will spend most of the trip empty, the convenience may not justify another separate case to carry and clean.

A reading-corner example

Imagine your side surface only needs to hold a paperback, a mug, and glasses in a case. Lay those three objects on paper rather than estimating from a product photograph with one cup. A narrow table may fit beside the chair but force the book to overlap the mug. A slightly wider top might work while its legs occupy the route used when standing up. Compare both the tabletop rectangle and the deployed foot outline. If an existing camp table can move a little closer without crowding another person, it may solve the same reach problem. The smallest useful table is the one that handles the actual objects and the complete movement around the chair.

Is it worth adding to your kit?

Consider it if

You need a reachable small surface and the table fits both the chair and the campsite layout.

Skip it if

A clear corner of an existing table already provides the same convenience.

Common questions

Is a larger tabletop more stable?

Not necessarily. Frame design, setup, ground, and the maker's limits matter; do not infer stability from area alone.

Can I sit on a camp side table?

Only if the maker explicitly designs and approves it for that use; ordinary side tables should not be treated as seats.
