Before Raising a Camp Cot, Measure the Tent Walls

Raising a cot can create useful space beneath it, but tent walls often slope inward above the floor. A cot that fits low down may touch the shelter when elevated. Measure the complete sleeping arrangement before buying extensions simply to gain a little storage height.

Identify the compatible cot

Record the cot's model and version, including any long or wide designation. Helinox specifies which cots accept its leg extensions; that does not make the parts universal. Check the quantity of extensions needed for the selected model. Do not mix similar-looking legs from different systems or assume that a higher position keeps the original geometry unchanged.

Measure clearance above the floor

Pitch the tent and locate the cot's proposed top height using the product dimensions. Measure the interior width at that height, not just along the floor seam. Add the thickness of your intended pad and bedding when considering the sleeping surface. Check the corners near the head and foot, where sloping walls can reduce space most sharply.

Test the storage you want to gain

Choose the actual bags you would place beneath the cot and measure them. Consider whether they can be removed without moving the bed or blocking the door. A small increase in height has little value if a frame brace still stops the bag from sliding through. Keep the tent's walking route and intended ventilation clear. Storage capacity should come from a workable layout, not an empty-space calculation alone.

Rearrange before buying

An existing low tote beside the cot may provide easier access than under-bed storage. Borrowing a suitable taller cot can also reveal whether you prefer the raised sleeping position. If you purchase extensions, follow all setup, capacity, and ground instructions and consider how cot feet interact with the tent floor. The accessory is a layout choice; it does not replace appropriate bedding or insulation.

A sloping-wall example

Suppose a low cot fits close to the side of a dome tent and you want extensions so a storage bag can slide beneath it. Mark the proposed sleeping surface height and measure the tent's interior width there. The upper cot corner may approach the sloping wall even though the feet still fit on the floor. Move a cardboard outline of the stored bag through the proposed access route as well. If a brace blocks it or the bag would have to pass across the doorway, the extra height may not provide useful storage. A low existing tote beside the cot could offer easier access without changing the bed position or adding several new rigid components.

Is it worth adding to your kit?

Consider it if

A supported higher cot position improves your layout and clears both walls and stored gear.

Skip it if

The tent narrows above the floor or an existing side tote provides simpler storage.

Common questions

Will the cot still fit if the floor dimensions match?

Not necessarily. Measure wall clearance at the raised cot and bedding height.

Does a higher cot replace a sleeping pad?

No. Select appropriate bedding separately; elevation alone does not establish warmth or comfort.
