Backpack Rain Covers: Fit the Loaded Shape, Including Outside Pockets
A backpack’s stated litres describe capacity, not every shape it takes when packed. Choose a rain cover around the actual loaded bag and its approved attachment method.

Record the packed outline
Pack the bag as you expect to carry it and inspect the top lid, side pockets and external attachments. A sleeping pad or a tall bottle can extend beyond the main body. The cover must follow its intended fitting instructions without compressing or snagging equipment. Do not assume a capacity range accounts for every outside load.
Osprey’s medium Ultralight Raincover lists a pack-volume range and a drawcord arrangement. That is a model-specific reference, not proof that a similarly sized cover will fit an unrelated backpack. Compare shape and documented compatibility alongside nominal litres.
Check the route around straps
Read where the cover edge belongs relative to the shoulder harness, hip belt and adjustment points. An external cover must not obstruct the backpack’s proper fit or trap a strap where it cannot move as intended. Rehearse fitting it with the pack supported and follow the maker’s instructions.
If the bag contains a built-in cover, inspect that component before buying a replacement. Its attachment and packed location may be different from an aftermarket design. Keep a replacement identifiable so another traveller does not confuse it with a cover sized for a smaller bag.
Plan access during a wet day
List the items you need without emptying the pack: a route note, clothing layer or snack. Consider how the cover changes access to those compartments. Repeatedly removing it may be acceptable, but the routine should not encourage leaving a vulnerable item exposed simply because its pocket is inconvenient to reach.
An external cover does not turn the complete backpack into a submersible container. REI’s rain guidance discusses protection as part of a broader packing plan. Follow the actual limitations for sensitive contents and use suitable internal containment where needed rather than making a blanket waterproof guarantee.
Allow a drying and inspection step
Read the cover’s cleaning, drying and storage instructions. A wet cover stuffed into its pouch is a transport state, not automatically a suitable long-term storage state. Inspect the drawcord, seams and attachment points using the maker’s guidance before the next trip.
Compare retaining a functioning included cover, replacing a damaged approved component and changing the outside packing arrangement. Removing an unnecessary external load may solve a fit problem more simply than choosing an oversized cover. The purchase should support a workable rain routine rather than merely matching a number on the backpack label.
Is it worth adding to your kit?
Consider it if
The cover fits the loaded pack under its documented fitting method and improves a realistic wet-weather packing plan.
Skip it if
The built-in cover works or the external load prevents a properly documented fit.

Common questions
Does a matching litre range guarantee fit?
No. Pack shape, external contents and the cover’s attachment design also matter.
Can I treat the covered pack as waterproof storage?
Do not assume that. Check the cover and bag limitations separately, especially for sensitive contents.
